Planning a Wedding When You’re a Designer

I married my bestie, my confidant, my Michael, back in August, 2024. On the 31st to be exact. Hence, my new name, Emma Zink. I took his name because it has fewer letters than Maddock. And I think it sounds cool. Ok, moving on!

If you’ve ever planned a wedding, for yourself or someone else, you may know how much work it takes.

One of the biggest issues of planning your wedding while being a designer stems from the fact that designers are particular. I am a self-proclaimed lover of print, so when it came to designing and printing my own invitations, I had to go big or go home.

At the end of it all, no one except yourself gives a care in the world about how fancy your wedding stationery is. What really matters is the people who show up to support your love. All they need to know is the time, place, and where the bar is! On the other hand, if you love details like I do, why not put the time into making them what you want?

I thoroughly enjoyed the creation of everything from the stationary, to the signage, the florals, and the thank-you cards (which we still haven’t sent out…sorry to everyone who we are thankful for!)

Without further ado, here are all of the designed pieces I made for Michael’s and my wedding. I’m also featuring the florals by my mom, Tam of home etc., the black and white checkered dance floor with a glass chandelier built by my dad and my new father in law, Dan, and my photographer Bronwyn for taking these photos to capture it all!

Invitation with gold-foil, gatefold overlay. Topped with a wax seal of our monogram used throughout the wedding.

Thrifted over-shirts with each of the bridesmaid’s names pressed on the pockets. The shirt colors matched each of their dresses.

Bridesmaid dresses were curated and chosen by color. Two greens, two blues, and a pink and purple dress to match the colors of the florals and other elements of the wedding.

Hand-made vow books. I re-covered some small, thread-bound books from a craft store with nice watercolor paper that I ripped to create a deckled edge. I then added the black bows on the spine and added our names to the front right using the font ‘Prosecco and Baguette’ from Creative Market.

Signage throughout the “venue” (aka, my parents’ yard about 20 miles south of Fargo, ND).

So many florals. And look at that beauty of a dance floor in the background!

Custom playing cards that our guests wrote messages on. This was in lieu of a guestbook.

Custom playing cards with notes on them from our guests.

Thrifted Bride and Groom champagne glasses that my mom found for the head table. Look at that gorgeous lettering.

Head-table chairs from Facebook Marketplace. The colors in these chairs confirmed by want for a very colorful, garden themed wedding.

A zoomed-out view of the head table. The centerpiece of the table was the silo that’s been on the property since the 60’s. All of the cane-back chairs were thrifted or found on Facebook marketplace.

Entrance to the reception with a ton of flowers in large, white vases that were varied height by sitting on the ground and on various pillars.

Another dance-floor image.

Heart cake with cherries on top!

One more for good measure. Michael and I on the dance floor <3
